Kelly Taylor - Beverly Hills 90210

Kelly Taylor is just an awful person from the beginning of the series to the end.
In the first season she is a stuck up snob who speaks only of clothing and boys. The only reason she becomes friends with Brenda is to avoid having a fat girl as a lab partner. Kelly treats all those around her badly. She constantly betrays Brenda, even hitting on her boyfriend after they have begun dating. She asks Brandon to the school dance, and then flaunts it in Andrea's face, even though she knows that Andrea is in love with him. She treats Steve horribly at the same dance, forgetting his birthday and ignoring the fact that he is in pain because he has found out that he was adopted. She is more interested in trying to get his best friend to make out with her and in being spring fling princess.

In the second season, this selfish, bratty persona completely devoid of empathy or substance continues. She treats David and his father horribly, even though both of them are nothing but kind to her. She continues to treat Steve and Brenda badly when it suits her to do so and for no real reason. It is also in this season that she whispers to Brandon when he brings an African American girl to the Peach Pit; "This is very hip of you Brandon." Then in the next season she sleeps with Brenda's boyfriend. This is just disgusting. She not only sleeps with her best friend's boyfriend once, she continues to do it and be his "thing on the side". This is bad enough, but to top it off, she isn't even a good girlfriend to him. She makes him indulge her every crazy whim. When he needs her, for example when his father died, she refuses to go to the funeral with him because she thinks she looks fat.

The worst part about this character comes in the later seasons. One would think that at least someone who has broken apart loving relationships, thrown friends aside, betrayed others, and slept with almost guy friend she ever had would be non-judgmental. This is the good thing about people with a past. If they are matured by it then they grow to be less harsh on others around them. They become forgiving and take a more zen-like outlook on life. But with the awful Kelly Taylor, this is not the case.

When Brenda leaves the show, she is succeeded by Valerie and later Gina. These are two women with tragic childhoods. They did not grow up in privilege and sunshine like Ms. Taylor. She could never imagine the things those poor girls went through. Yet, from the moment they arrive, the same jealousy she showed towards Brenda reared it's ugly head. She berated them, outcast them and treated them like garbage. Not only did she NOT give them a break when they made mistakes (mistakes which were far more understandable given their backgrounds, as opposed to Kelly who did all the same things but for no reason other than an inability to care for anyone but herself), but she evolved into the most judgmental character on the show.

With Kelly's inclusion in the show, the message seemed to be that if you are a selfish brat who has no problem betraying everyone around you to get what you want; you will always be forgiven and always come out on top. Meanwhile, those you destroy will be cast to the side and disappear.

  1. Don't forget the time when she cheated on Dylan with his best friend. That woman sure loves to destroy friendships. Doesn't she? And then, there's the little hissy fit she threw when Brenda called Dylan after she was arrested for breaking into the lab that Andrea worked in.

  4. Agreed! Not to mention after stealing Brendas (her "best friends") boyfriend she makes out with him all the time right in front of her. It's really sickening that she did that to Brenda and the writers had it so everyone acted like it was no big deal including Brandon. I'm sorry but if they were being realistic with the storyline Brandon would be very upset they did this to his sister and the rest of the gang at the very least would agree it was wrong what they had done to Brenda. After everything Kelly did to her, Brenda continued to try and be the bigger person and helps decorate for Kelly's birthday party. She then proceeds to find Kelly passed out on the bathroom floor, s c reams for everyone to call 911 (I would've let the bitch lay there) and when they get to the hospital the first thing Kelly says to Brenda is and I quote "it looks like I'm going to live so you can't have Dylan back). Seriously the worst bitch in the show. I feel like writers and producers need to separate the actor from the character because when they don't they get terrible, hated characters and don't even realize it. I always felt Brendas pain and felt she was never the same after the betrayal. I won't watch the final episode or pretty much any episode after Brenda left because I still believe Dylan and Brenda belong together. Although sometimes I feel she's too good for him. Dylan had to always kiss Kelly's ass and follow her. Where Brenda gave him more freedom to be himself

  6. Rewatching the show now and every time she's on the screen I cringe. The fact that they only mentioned the fact that she cheated with her best friend's boyfriend once and Val was instantly shut down when she did was disgusting. The WORST character by far.

  7. AGREE! I always thought that Kelly was the face of the typical american girl, and thats why the writers made her sooo popular as the show went along.. I am danish, in Denmark everyone hated end still hates Kelly...

Why is almost every guy falling for her.. Why cant Donna see what a lying and coneiving bitch her Best friend is.. In real lide Kelly would have been a very lonely person without Any friends..

  8. I completely agree! Ugh, thank you I've been saying this for years now, she's just terrible! Such a awful character and yet all the men on the show are infatuated with her! How can such a backstabbing, judgmental brat get so much sympathy on the show? Her character made me cringe, couldn't stand her.

  9. Thank you! I hate Kelly and would only wish Dylan on her so that she could never truly be happy (Let's be real: Dylan was not stable "boyfriend" material). Despite every trauma you could put on a person, she didn't change. How?? When she became judgmental, I was done with her. Utterly done.

I'm so glad I'm not the only one thinking this.

  11. The absolute worst. Poor Shannen got so much hate on the show and in real life. Kelly was a backstabbing bitch. It is so unrealistic that everyone supported her and Dylan’s relationship after how she went about it. As soon as Brenda left for Paris, Kelly put her hooks into Dylan. Everyone knows the most covenant code is you don’t go after your best friend’s boyfriend even if you are broken up which technically Brenda and Dylan weren’t really broken up. She just went to Paris for 6 weeks. Kelly is trash and the worst kind of hypocrite. In the end, Dylan and Brenda had and still have a stronger bond and connection. They were each other’s 1st loves and he always ran back to her when things got to be too much for him. He always chose Brenda. Kelly and Dylan fought constantly. She also then makes a play for Brandon yet again destroying more friendships. She’s a horrible character and the absolute worst kind of friend. I always loved Brenda. She was the real friend. She was so forgiving which is another unrealistic reaction on this show. The writers clearly did not understand loyalty and codes when it came to relationships. In the real world, Kelly would have been outcasted, not Brenda. I wish her character wouldn’t have left. She treated every new girl like shit. Fuck Kelly Taylor with her round face and chipmunk teeth.

  12. Don't forget how she had to always have brandon's and Dylan's attention when her current boyfriend and she were fighting. Plus, she tried to make Dylan feel guilty for getting engaged to Antonia later even though, AGAIN, she was with someone else. I always want to say to her "shut up! not everything is about you."

  13. It’s funny that people still hate Kelly Taylor 20+ years later! I’m watching old reruns on Hulu and I forgot how horrible her character was. I still can’t believe that none of their friends, or Brendas brother, cared that she messed around with Dylan behind her best friends back! Once I get to the middle of season 3 I start to lose interest.

  14. haha! Funny, i'm watching the old episodes and I've always felt kelly was a stuck up wench. I hated that she practically blamed Gina for her & donna's dad's death. I hated a lot of stuff she did. Smh

  15. Sad, I can only stomach the show when Valerie or Gina's on the show. Any other time, I couldn't watch because she was supposed to be the center of the world. Also, Jenny (i think her name is.. the actress's name), I heard she hated Vanessa (who played Gina) and made her feel like crap on the set. Wow

  16. "The worst part about this character comes in the later seasons" exactly. That's totally summed everything up. From what I remember, she was watchable in the first season or 2 but after that...no. Not at all!

  17. yeah and in the reboot when she got mad at brenda for dylan calling her and basically accused her of trying to “steal” him... AS IF SHE DIDNT DO IT FIRST???
